Apparently stolen from a Soviet Commandant, Kusanagi's new body, developed by the legendary Dr. Shikishima, is a highly advanced cybernetic exoskeleton. She has a retinal implant (to monitor her brain waves) and a cyberbrain that allows her to communicate with the internet and connect with her team. She is also completely cybernetic, with all functions (including lethal tissues) either replaced or augmented depending on the level of threat she could encounter. When Kusanagi was captured by the Puppet Master into his virtual world, she was able to retain only her barest of cybernetic functions. Under the mastery of the Puppet Master, her cybernetic body is growing more capable every minute.
Kusanagi finally succeeds in helping the Puppet Master hack into the Japanese government's mainframe, and several of his computers manage to get ahold of several nuclear weapons, and threatens to set them off unless they are returned into their hidden caches. However in this particular case, the Puppet Master is himself a participant in the plot, describing how he manipulated Kusanagi into his virtual world to create this potential threat and intending to use her to bring an end to his life.
After arriving in the organization where she was trained, Kusanagi begins to question her mental condition, as the members of the organization are very unfriendly to her, constantly suspicious of her actions and even of her gender. Having been nervous during her journey, she is now feeling uneasy in her new position. During the execution of the operation to retrieve various weapons, Kusanagi enacts a side mission to rescue her fellow comrade Batou. He has been taken captive by a rival gang in order to get information about two operatives, Tabun and Amagi, whom the organization have a bounty of 100 million in their heads, in exchange for their freedom.
That night, Kusanagi and Batou visit Megatech, where she confronts Nakamura. He coverts the shell into a political bioweapon, which he plans to release. Through a sleeper agent, Nakamura learns who Kusanagi is, and the network becomes aware of the situation. Nakamura kills himself. d2c66b5586
