Though the term “film noir” has become synonymous with the genre that defined its parent, and producer Nicholas Ray loved to use it, the city-by-the-sea movies are hard to pin down. While the term has become a catch-all for B-movies directed by outstanding directors, the term “film noir” typically implies a darker, moodier style that is harder to pin down. Some of the earliest noirs are Italian and are generally of the gritty, street-wise type; others, like Michael Curtiz’s Johnny Souther, are set in the big city with an ex-mobster in a spotlight leading a double-life as a hitman.
For “Horny Roxy,” the moving and semi-unconscious tale of a boy with no respect for women, and one who has a knack for latching onto women who do not want to be hooked, that isn’t the case. The film looks and plays like a B-movie, an hour and a half of dreamlike, nightmarish, unexplained violence.
