The same is true of controlling a stereo mix bus with more monitor faders. For instance, you might use channels 1-3 to control your main speakers and channels 4-6 to control your Mixcubes. The idea is that you need to control the mix from two perspectives: the overall mix of the song and the individual parts of the song. The mix bus is the most consistent place for the overall mix to be. Each Aux channel will have one fader for each subgroup within the mix bus (e.g., vocals, drums, guitar, keys, etc). This leaves enough room for each subgroup to have an individual master fader. This gives you great control over the volume of each subgroup and, thus, the overall mix.
If you have both a stereo mix bus and multiple aux channels to monitor and control, there is no magic button to make a song sound great. It's all about trial and error. But with this set up, you should have a pretty easy time of it.
The order of the channels is important. Let's assume the stereo mix bus is on channel 2. To keep things simple, we'll start with just one monitor fader. If you have two monitor channels, start with the one you feel like you need the least amount of control over. Your order should be:
2-1: Monitor 1
2-2: Monitor 2
You're at the mercy of the mixer to make sure your signals are properly balanced, though, so you may need to turn volume down on the unneeded channels to maximize the amount of the stereo image that actually gets through to your speakers.
If you have the room, you could also set up a set of stereo monitors and a set of headphones and control them with a single fader as well. I'd suggest this only for songs that are short enough that you don't need to worry about what you're monitoring.
In the Mix bus, the master fader on the left is the stereo mix of the master tracks. This is the input path that we will bounce to stereo stems or live record. The mix fader on the right is the stereo mix of the mono Aux tracks and is the track that we will send to a Monitor channel.
In this example, our main stereo faders are controlling the main guitar and keyboard stems. The individual instruments can be controlled by individual faders on the Aux tracks. The master fader is controlling the Mix bus.
The group will now be locked to that stereo master. You can move this group to a new track and move that group to another track. In this example, I am moving the stereo master to a new track. From this point on, every time you move this group, it will lock to that new stereo master. This makes it really easy to work on.
What you can do now is create a stereo master for each instrument and put them all on a single track. In this example, I have created two stereo master tracks, one for each instrument. The total number of stereo master tracks in the session can be 1, 2, or more. I just created two to keep things simple.
